A captivating augmented reality tour in collaboration with Acute Art, taking you from the main entrance to the rooftop terrace of the PHI Centre.

A NEW WAY TO DISCOVER AUGMENTED REALITY

Apparition presents works by four significant contemporary artists: Darren Bader, Marco Brambilla, Koo Jeong A, and Bjarne Melgaard. The show, a collaboration with Acute Art, represents a new chapter in the conversation between art and technology, an ever-evolving field explored at PHI.

Art can act as an early warning system that can prepare us for the world of tomorrow. These AR projects represent a leap into the future, exploring entirely new possibilities for art to reach audiences. The works display phantom-like qualities—at once ghostly, spectral, and hologrammatic simulacra—they are present in non-tangible ways.

Invisible to the naked eye, they come to life in your phone when you arrive at the right spot. Once caught on camera they appear as real as the environment around them. Through the juxtaposition of physical and virtual worlds, they communicate a sense of surprise and wonder. Some of them may appear as mischievous tricks, others as awe-inspiring materializations of other worlds.

The advent of AR allows new forms of public art to emerge and new exhibition models to evolve outside traditional institutions. Could we instead imagine immersive experiences distributed across geographies in novel ways, connecting local experiential nodes in ways that chart an entirely new territory? With Apparition, PHI presents Acute Art’s groundbreaking approach to new exhibition formats.

Darren Bader

Playful and plaintive, sincere and satiric, Darren Bader's take on sculpture has been called "immodestly heterodox" and "dead-end Modernist deadpan". He's gained recognition for food sculpture, selling money, found-object fetish, mismanaged fauna, and failing to launch sculptures into outer space. Some people find his work funny. He less frequently does, but can take a compliment.

P Hi Apparitions 1920x1920 web Marco Brambilla

Marco Brambilla

Marco Brambilla is an Italian-born Canadian video installation artist based in London. He directed 'Demolition Man’, (1993) before shifting focus to video and photography projects. In 2020, he directed the music video for Kanye West's 'Power'. His installation, 'Cathedral' was showcased during the Toronto International Film Festival festival 2008, and his 3D work 'Evolution' was selected for the 2011 Venice Film Festival and the 2012 Sundance Film Festival. A second 3D work is a permanent installation at the Standard Hotel in New York. 'Transit', a collection of photographs Brambilla took in and around national and international airports, was published by Booth-Clibborn Editions in 2000.

Koo Jeong A

Since the early 1990s, Koo Jeong A has made works that are seemingly casual and commonplace, yet at the same time remarkably precise, deliberate, and considered. Her reflections on the senses and the body incorporate objects, still and moving images, audio elements, and aromas. Many of her works are conceived within site-specific environments that question the limits of fact and fiction, the imaginary and actuality of our world. Koo Jeong A considers the connection of energies between a place and people, relying on chance to drive her encounters.

Bjarne Melgaard

Bjarne Melgaard (b. 1967) was born in Sydney, Australia to Norwegian parents. In installations that include paintings, videos, and mixed-media works, the artist explores themes of substance addiction, sexuality, and self-destruction. Bjarne Melgaard has exhibited in institutions across the world and will be presenting a major retrospective of his work at the new MUNCH museum in Oslo in 2024.
