Helena Martin Franco – Absence à main levée/Freehand Absence/Ausencia a mano alzada

Freehand Absence is a performance by Helena Martin Franco which was initially broadcast live on the PHI Foundation’s website on April 6, 2021, as part of our public engagement project Incandescences. This performance reintegrates some materials used in the artist’s initial exploration in the Foundation’s archives, such as charcoal, cardboard and masking tape. These materials are associated with reflections on the traces of coloniality found within contemporary institutions, and on dynamics between the centre and the periphery. By thinking of the frame of the video and her own body as contours to retrace (and to redefine), Freehand Absence makes public the artist’s research by allowing it to step out of its initial setting.
