The residency
PHI North is a residency designed for Canadian-based musicians offering a unique opportunity for artists to delve into and fine-tune their musical projects.
The program provides a two-week creative retreat at a riverside lodge in the Laurentian mountains, complete with exclusive access to a recording studio and technical support from an in-house engineer. This residency enables artists to break away from their daily routines and wholly focus on the exploration and experimentation of their artistic pursuits.

“The PHI North Residency is a creative haven where time no longer exists and ideas are awakened.”
— Annie-Claude Deschênes, PHI North 2022-2023
"This residency was a turning point. For me, there is a very marked before/after, and this, on several levels. I am happy to have been able to crystallize fragments of this experience in my new project."
— Mehdi Bahmad, PHI North 2022-2023
“I salute the initiative of PHI North to create an artistic centre that reflects the needs of today's musicians. Outside the tumults of the city, a new approach to creation was revealed to me, guided by an idyllic and intimate context. An invaluable experience that I will carry with me from now on and whose fruit will never cease to enrich my practice."
— Gene Tellem, PHI North 2022-2023
“PHI North is a place where dreams come true. In a space that is so serene, we were able to reflect on and awaken to what is truly important in the recording process - feeling joy in creating, embracing the waves of the musical process, eating well and resting, taking care of our bodies, taking care of each other, connecting with nature, and just simply being together!”
— Thanya Iyer, PHI North 2022-2023
“The PHI North residency absolutely inspired a new frame of work for how I express my art. I truly believe that the environment has a huge influence on your behaviour and mental health so being surrounded by nature all while creating and having access to a state of the art studio space helped push the momentum of my work to newer heights. It's a one of a kind experience.”
– Lunice, PHI North 2021-2022
“The residency allowed me to use rest in my art.”
– Gayance, PHI North 2021-2022
“Participating in the PHI Nord residency gave us such an amazing opportunity to work, play, bond, and create in a beautiful setting. A little escape from the busy world, this residency was the exact time and space needed to work on my next album. The nature, rec facilities, living spaces, and recording studio were all excellent and beyond our expectations! Highly recommended for any artist at any stage in their creative process.”
– Eve Parker Finley, PHI North 2021-2022

An initiative by PHI made possible thanks to the support of SiriusXM Franco.
PHI is a cultural infrastructure dedicated to supporting contemporary art and artists probing the key agenda of our times, and facilitating access between them and the public. Composed of three entities — PHI Studio, PHI Foundation, and PHI Centre — PHI is guided by values that include generosity, rigour, the importance of community, and devotes itself to the innovation and evolution of cultural experiences that both challenge and delight.
To reiterate its commitment to supporting local artistic communities, and to help shape the art of tomorrow, PHI offers three artistic residency programs annually: North, Montréal and Immersive. Although each residency meets different artists’ needs, our common mission is to provide our artists in residence with the tools, support, and impetus they need to expand the scope of their practice and take it to the next level.
