The Sisters of the Celestial Order of Nephology invite you to share a photo of the sky in exchange for a prophecy as part of the PHI Montréal residency
The Sisters of the Celestial Order of Nephology (the study of clouds) is an interdisciplinary performance project by Horizon Factory (Erin Hill and Nina Vroemen).
Deep Gazing, a term coined by The Sisters, is a practice for people to attune with their environments. Inspired by Pauline Oliveros’s Deep Listening work, it bridges cloud identification and forecasting with tools for creating personal and intimate links with the weather.
A storm does not end, but continues to move, to shift, and influence other systems. Deep Gazing is a timely practice that has helped The Sisters think through what it means to be a part of a complex, interconnected world and how to attune to the environment sensorially, sensually, and spiritually.
Within the context of the PHI Montréal residency, we—The Sisters of the Celestial Order of Nephology—offer our celestial services. In exchange for your pictures of clouds, we will send you a personalized prophecy informed by our knowledge of the sky.
Help us build a cloud atlas: see the call for participation below.
Step 1
Send us a picture of the sky and a sentiment you are feeling at that moment.
Step 2
In return, we will send you a celestial prophecy. This celestial service is provided until June 29, 2025.
Submit your entry via email at [email protected] or DM us on Instagram (@horizonfactory).
With your authorization, sent images could be part of a publication available on-site within our exhibition at PHI.
Listen to Scrying: the weather is always becoming ↓
Find out more about Scrying, an ancient method of prophesizing through gazing. The Sisters practice Scrying with the sky, identifying messages and meanings in the clouds beyond the art of forecasting.
The Sisters of the Celestial Order of Nephology (the study of clouds) is an interdisciplinary performance project by Horizon Factory (Erin Hill and Nina Vroemen). Forming in 2019, during a dance residency at Studio 303 (Montreal), the fictitious, pseudo-sect of two, blue cloaked, atmospheric-nuns were called by the unseizable state of clouds and the ephemeral narratives that form them. These narratives are personal, environmental, futuristic, and potential warning signs. The Sisters engage across multiple mediums and disciplines, including performance, video, radio, workshops, and writing. In 2024, they printed the prototype for their forthcoming publication Deep Gazing. They have presented their work at RURART (Cookshire-Eaton, 2020), at the Fonderie Darling (Montreal, 2020), at the Third Space Gallery (Saint John, New Brunswick, 2021), at Artscape Gibraltar (Toronto, 2022), at CCOV (Montreal, 2022), at SummerWorks (Toronto, 2023), at Eastern Bloc (Montreal, 2023), at the Performing Arts Forum (Saint-Erme, France, 2023), and at PIQUE (Ottawa 2024).
The PHI Montréal residency program is presented by PHI in partnership with the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec.
