A night of new media performances from the Kohlenstoff collective by avant-garde musicians paired with video creators.

Kohlenstoff was born of a necessity: to structure and name the scene developed by a new generation of electroacoustic and contemporary composers. Serving as a platform to promote and share the work of its artists, it also encourages the emergence of a lively scene reflecting the uniqueness of every approach.

Kohlenstoff exists in two parts: the collective and the record label.

Created in 2013, the collective is a platform for its members to propose concerts, events and collective works. Much like its members, it offers a diverse choice of genres - acousmatic music, experimental, mixed media, ambient, minimalism and welcomes other practices such as video, performance art and installation. The collective is always on the lookout for new unique voices, away from the established canon.

In September 2013, Kohlenstoff Records was born at a concert at SKOL Gallery in Montreal. This event was the incarnation of the values of the collective by it eclecticism and motivation to create bridges between different artists and milieus in new music.

Chayer Lefebvre · Music

Alain Lefebvre makes concrete noise with amplified objects and lo-fi devices which he pushes beyond their intended use and capabilities. He is interested in using typically unwanted sounds as a means of reconsidering prevailing distinctions between the intrinsically musical and the intrinsically non-musical.

In 2018, Lefebvre and Yannick Chayer formed the lo-fi glitch duo Chayer Lefebvre and together they founded Rara Avis - a digital label for mostly local artists and musicians whose projects deviate not only from past but also from current paradigms of experimental music.

Both members have been active for more than a decade in Montreal’s D.I.Y. milieu. Communal improvisation is central to their approach. Lefebvre, trained as a visual artist, has performed at festivals in Spain, Saskatoon, Québec, New York and Montréal (Mutek 2014 and 2015). His discography (occasionally under the moniker of “Total Music”, “Dead Squirrels”, or “Bon Ami”) spans releases with Kohlenstoff, Mikroclimat, Jeunesse Cosmique and Rara Avis.

Véro Marengère · Visuals

Véro Marengère is an audiovisual artist that lives and works in Montreal, Tio’tia:ke/Mooniyang. Evolving between 3D video art, music performances and field recording, her practice reflects on the digital manifestations of animist rhetoric and botanist litterature. Her work is looking at ecosophy to create cybernaturalist spaces, whereas her esthetic recalls contemplation, childhood and vitality. She has presented her work notably at MUTEK, OFF Festival Jazz, AKOUSMA, MAPP Montreal, POP Montreal, Lumifest, La Cinémathèque Québécoise, Suoni Per Il Popolo and Sound/Image.

Dominic Jasmin · Music

Dominic Jasmin is a composer and improviser from Montreal, Qc. His music, somewhere between free jazz and acousmatic music, blends the accidental and unpredictable nature of the former with the techniques of the latter to create what has been described as structured noise. Primarily working with found sounds and electronics, he also incorporates guitar and voice to some of his live sets.

He graduated from the Conservatoire de Musique de Montréal in 2018 and has been active on the music scene there through his involvement in organizing concerts with Kohlenstoff collective and Mardi Spaghetti as well as being an active musician. Apart from his solo practice through which he has collaborated with many other artists, he is involved in different projects including Actors Artificial, SJF Trio and Larsen.

Guillaume Cliche · Visuals

Guillaume Cliche is a Montreal-based live electronic music performer and composer. He is particularly interested in real-time algorithmic composition. His work relies on energetic musical contrast in order to provoke explicit perceptual oppositions. Therefore, his pieces mix noisy, hard and chaotic moments with more minimal, melodic and hypnotic sections. Guillaume graduated from the Montreal Conservatory of Music and has a bachelor's degree in Visual Arts at UQAM. He is also part of the following music groups: Paysage primitif, Cliche/d'Orion, Transparente and GGROUNDD. His music can be heard on record labels such as Kohlenstoff Records and Mikroclimat. His work has been presented in several national and international events (Argentina, Germany, Italy).

Emilie Roby is a multidisciplinary artist and holds a bachelor degree in visual arts from Université du Québec à Montréal. She pursued her research in electroacoustics at Université de Montréal, and her work has been featured in festivals. She is currently completing a master’s degree in Intermedia at Concordia University, where her work in performance unfolds from the genre of autofiction; bridging sound design, music, and voice.

Jean-François Robin · Visuals

Jean-François Robin (FR) is a Tiohtiá:ke/Montreal-based intermedia artist. He graduated with a MFA in Intermedia Arts in 2021. His work centers around the translation between material and digital matter, with a particular attention for what resists the translative act and what is disfigured as a result of this process. He primarily works with digital molds created with photogrammetry.

Xavier Ménard · Music

Xavier Ménard is a sound artist graduated from Université de Montréal (UdeM) with a bachelor's degree in digital music. He starts to compose his own electroacoustic pieces in the sound design class by Nicolas Bernier and electroacoustic composition classes under the supervision of Robert Normandeau and Georges Forget. He creates his sounds with natural and instrument recordings as well as mixed electric components (switches, mixing boards, synthesizer, oscillators). He also collaborates on a variety of artistic projects, creating interactive sound installations with Camille St-Amand since 2016 (menard_st-amand) and art performances with visual artist Roxane Lussier since 2021 (Rox & Xav). His work reaches the public during various events and festivals across Canada.

Myriam Bleau · Visuals

Myriam Bleau is a composer, digital artist and performer based in Montréal. Using music and sound as a point of departure, she has created gestural electronic music performances, audiovisual interfaces, installations and interactive devices that articulate sound, light, movement and symbols. Her work investigates performance, both as a codified cultural manifestation, and as an embodied (re)enactment of symbolic systems through human and non-human agencies. It has been recognized and presented internationally, in festivals such as Prix Ars Electronica (AT), Sónar (ES, HK), MUTEK (MX, CA, AR, JP), Transmediale (DE) and Cafe Oto (UK).
