ANIMACHINA II.0 is a new series of six performances conceived through a collaboration between camille POLIQUIN (KROY) and Jonathon Anderson, in partnership with Toronto Metropolitan University’s Design + Technology Lab.
The work explores a shifting dynamic in which the boundaries between student and teacher blur, as fascination with robotic entities gradually leads to a loss of control. While their previous collaboration, ANIMACHINA: animisme et némésis, marked Poliquin’s first awe-filled encounter with the robots, ANIMACHINA II.0 offers a glimpse into how this relationship has evolved four years later. The performances appear to reverse their perspective: the robot now occupies center stage, while KROY assumes the role of helper, tool, and source. The balance of power has subtly shifted, suggesting a quiet submission.
The project continues the duo’s exploration of movement, fear, and obsession through live and recorded performances that observe and question the evolving relationship between humans and machines. For this second installment, instruments were designed and fabricated specifically for the robot to play: a five-headed flute (SLS 3D printing), a steel drum formed and performed by a KUKA robot, and a rubber tight-rope instrument whose vibrations are captured with contact microphones.
Live Performances
Exclusive live performances by KROY and the KUKA robots, bridging art and music.
camille POLIQUIN (she/her) is a composer and pluridisciplinary artist from Montreal.
With a practice that reaches through pop performances, art installations, performance arts and robotics, Poliquin cultivates her craft on the global stage since 2014.
In addition to her work done under her own name, POLIQUIN presents herself as KROY (BIRTHDAY, SCAVENGER, MILITIA) and as half of Milk & Bone (Little Mourning, Deception Bay, DIVE, Chrysalism, Baby Dreamer, A Little Lucky).
With accolades that range from NYLON JAPAN to ROLLING STONE and performances in dozens of countries, POLIQUIN is currently working original scores for film and television as well as a fourth Milk&Bone record and a series of ambient collaborations under the KROY moniker.
Jonathon Anderson (he/him) is an Associate Professor of Interior Design and the Director of The LAB.
Jonathon’s work explores how industrial manufacturing, robotics, and CNC technologies influence the design and making processes. As a result, his work is characterized by innovative and explorative methods that result in interconnected design, fine art, and technology solutions.
Embracing creative technology as a constantly evolving medium, Jonathon works with faculty members across The Creative School to expand the boundaries of creative scholarship and curriculum.
