Laura Kamugisha is a Congolese-Rwandan screenwriter, director, and producer based in Montreal. Her films explore cultural identity, memory, and intergenerational legacies through a visual poetry lens. She has directed short films including Les Lavandières (TIFF Next Wave, VIFF, FNC, Brooklyn Film Festival 2023), Trait d’Union (RIDM 2020), and Mitochondrial (FNC 2020). She holds a Bachelor’s in Film Production from Concordia University and describes both her projects and herself as sensitive, stubborn, and intuitive. Laura was part of the inaugural cohort of directors in Brown Girls Doc Mafia (New York, 2021). Supported by Fonds Rogers and BÉN, she is developing a comedic series titled La Saison and a dramatic fiction series with the support of the Cinema Academy and Warner Brothers Discovery. She was named Director of the Year 2024 at the Gala Dynastie. Passionate about amplifying marginalized creators, she founded the production company SAGE COMME UN ORAGE, producing fiction, documentary, experimental, and hybrid projects. Her productions include 8 Times (Vues d’Afrique 2024, dir. Adam Mbowe) and Nid d’Oiseau (BFF, FNC 2022, dir. Nadia Louis-Desmarchais).
