In this interview filmed as part of the Visualizing Sound Across Space and Time creative workshop presented at PHI, artist Stina Baudin discusses her artistic approach and the conception of this workshop in collaboration with PHI’s Education team.
This sensory and sound creation workshop invites participants to enter a space where sound takes shape and movement leaves a visible trace. Through a graphic score activity, participants are invited to trade words for texture, rhythm, and colour, sketching what they hear and feel through moments of attentive listening and sharing. Through lines that hum, dots that pulse, and forms that drift across the page, they will explore how music, sound, and movement can be seen, touched, and reimagined. These graphic scores will be created individually, in pairs, and collectively, using acrylic markers and watercolour paint in both small and large formats.
Visualizing Sound Across Space and Time is presented in conjunction with PHI’s 2025-2026 fall-winter exhibitions: swell of spæc(i)es by Josèfa Ntjam and Unity in Darkness by Manuel Mathieu, on view from October 23, 2025 to March 8, 2026.

Stina Baudin is a Haitian-Canadian artist based between Canada and the United States. She has studied at Concordia University in Montréal, Canada, and at the Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels, Belgium. She is a 2025 graduate from Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan, USA.
Stina’s weavings feature mixed media, including data, sonic mappings, text, archival materials and oral histories, to tell stories about Black people and their contested histories. Bringing together these narratives through intricate patterns, her work bridges the divide between traditional narrative and data, truth and myth. In this way, her work seeks to give expression to the varied bodies of knowledge that emerge through geographical movement, ritual, ancestry, and history.
Stina is a recipient of the Gilbert Foundation Scholarship and the Maxwell/Hanrahan Foundation Materials Award (USA) from Cranbrook Academy Art. Recent exhibitions include the Toronto Biennial of Art (2024), Cranbrook Museum of Fine Arts, and Centre Clark (CA). She has been awarded residencies at ZK/U Berlin, the Banff Centre for Art and Creativity (CA), and Pocoapoco (MX). Her work has been supported by the Canada Council for the Arts, Holon Berlin, and the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec.
