Step into the universe of Josèfa Ntjam, visual artist, with the exhibition swell of spæc(i)es. Between ocean and cosmos, her work invites you into worlds without beginning or end, where light, sound, and matter create a total immersion.
In this conversation, Josèfa shares her journey and inspirations, the influence of Sun Ra and Drexciya, and her collaboration with Fatima Al Qadiri, leading to unique visual and sonic experiences.
Josèfa Ntjam is an artist, performer and writer based in Saint-Étienne, France. Her practice combines sculpture, photomontage, moving image and sound. Collecting the raw material of her work from the internet, books on natural sciences and photographic archives, Ntjam uses assemblage—of images, words, sounds and stories—as a method to deconstruct the grand narratives underlying hegemonic discourses on origin, identity and race. Her work weaves multiple narratives drawn from investigations into historical events, scientific processes and philosophical concepts, which she confronts using references to African mythology, ancestral rituals, religious symbolism and science fiction. Her installation swell of spæc(i)es is presented by PHI in partnership with MOMENTA Biennal of Contemporary Art.
